What’s it like to be an MBA student at Schulich School of Business at York University?
More than 200 prospective graduate business students found out – the quiz-free way, by attending mini-lectures, discussion panels, campus tours and a reception where they chatted with current graduate students, alumni, faculty and staff during the Experience Schulich event on Saturday, March 2.
“Experience Schulich was a great day. We had a wonderful turnout of potential candidates, the buzz was energizing and our guests were excited to meet many of our faculty, students and alumni, who were on hand to answer questions,” said Charmaine Courtis, executive ExperienceSchulich1director of Student Services & International Relations.
Praveen Muruganandan, director of admissions and recruitment, said those attending the event were so engaged in networking and conversations with the dean, students, alumni and faculty that the reception at the day’s end had to be extended by an hour.
“Most of the people attending Experience Schulich have a few years of work experience and have already applied to the school,” said Muruganandan.
“There was a lot of interest in the sessions about the new specialized graduate business programs – the one-year Master of Accounting (MAcc) program, Master of Finance (MF) and the Master of Science in Business Analytics (MSc), along with the usual interest in the MBA programs,” he said. “Some students who were newly admitted to the Schulich MBA program also came to the MAcc session.”
Professor Ingo Holzinger delivered a 45-minute mini-lecture that captured the essence of his core MBA course, “Managing in Turbulent Times”. Marketing Professor Markus Giesler and Richard Ross, director of the Global Mining Management program and executive-in-ExperienceSchulich2residence at Schulich, also delivered mini-lectures.
Richard Bloom, MBA ’07, director of digital news for Rogers Communications, moderated a panel discussion by Schulich alumni Dave Chan (MBA ’05), senior investment analyst, Empire Life Insurance Company; Jeffrey Zon (MBA ’09), project manager, University Health Network; Nadia Malik (BBA ’03, MBA ’09), insight manager, H.J. Heinz; Renny Lam (MBA ’09), project executive, IBM Canada Ltd.; Naram Mansour (BBA ’07, MBA ’11), president, Carlyle Communities; and Zelka Ridjosic (MBA ’07), global business director, BioLucid.
Schulich applicant Charlene Tcheong attended the ninth annual Experience Schulich event and later wrote in her blog: “York, by far, has the warmest, most welcoming and helpful faculty members who leave you feeling quite good and connected to the institution…Excellent event. Learning is so exciting…I can’t wait to begin this chapter.”
